INFORMATION GLEANED FROM THE 1851 CENSUS DEVON
Click here to return to Fogwell main page
The 1851 Census has been a useful resource for
finding out more about the various families and their Devon distribution at the
time. It is the most useful early
census (of those which began to be taken every 10 years from 1801) because it
tends to give the birth location by specific area. It also gives occupations, ages, and addresses. Caution, however should be taken when using
the census (particularly the CD) transcribers can make mistakes, and people
themselves, do not always tell the truth about ages and relationships (I have a
number of examples of this in my own line).

From the above, it can be deduced that the
origins of most Vogwells and Vogwills
from the Census
Were from the parishes of Peter Tavy,
Withecombe, Plymouth, Whitchurch, and Kingsteinton.

Again from the above graphs it can be
deduced that most of the Fogwills and Fogwells originated on the census from
the parishes of Berry Pomeroy, Brixham, Bovey Tracey, Cockington, Dartmouth,
Harberton, Newton Bushell, Slapton, Totnes, and Widdicombe (see below for
modern map of area).
Note: There were also Fogwells/Vogwells recorded on
the 1851 Census possibly with other spelling variants of the above names
(if anyone has any more to add I would be pleased to include them below).
